The Haverford School

In Fords in Four, we ask an alumnus four questions; he shares insights and stories. In this blog post, Malik Twyman ’17 shares memories from his Haverford School days and reflections on how he became the man he is today. Twyman was a star running back for the Fords and then a tailback for Colgate University. He was awarded Colgate's 2021 Men's Athletics Director Leadership Award, which celebrates his achievements and contributions to his team, school, and wider community. He is now a Legal Practice Assistant for Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. 

What is your favorite memory from your time at The Haverford School?

The times I remember most at Haverford are when the school day was over and my friends and I were sitting on the second floor outside of the Admissions Office, talking about our days and laughing about some challenging test we had just taken. It was in those times that I truly felt the brotherhood that Haverford radiates to those who wish to join its community. 

How did Haverford change you, from your first to your final days here?

I remember my first day walking from the R5 train to Haverford and feeling completely out of place. I was a kid from a public school in New Jersey, who only knew one or two people in the entire school. With each step closer to the front door, I grew just a bit more nervous. By the time 2017 came, I won the award given to the sixth former who demonstrated the most growth academically and intellectually. Even though I was new to Haverford, I had the mentality that I would succeed here in every way I could. That mentality was not just on the field. I wanted to be the best student, the most respectful, the most caring. As one of the best running backs in the state, I didn't care to have the image of the "cool kid." I sat with kids who would otherwise sit by themselves at lunch. I was who I was. Haverford pushed me out of my comfort zone from day one, which ultimately helped me settle into the man I wanted to see when I look in the mirror in the morning. I thank Haverford for giving me that. 

What lessons from The Haverford School do you carry with you?

Haverford taught me to truly be there for those around me. I vividly remember Peer Counseling and learning how to listen. In times of need, people don't need to know how you dealt with an issue they may possibly be going through, all they need is someone who will listen and allow some of the weight to leave their shoulder. I learned to be respectful and what it meant to compose myself with honor. I addressed everyone, no matter their position, with respect. Treat everyone equally and, in return, they will treat you well.

What was a significant bond you formed during your Haverford days?

The bond I established with my friends is something I still have to this day. We are all still in a group chat and text daily, even though now we are all scattered throughout the country. Those men were always there for me and supported me, since the moment I showed up. I must also shout out Henry Fairfax ’99. He took a chance on me and presented me with an opportunity that allowed me to attend Haverford. That opportunity changed my life forever.
