Lower School House System
The Origin Story
The Four Pillars of Haverford
For nearly a century and a half, The Haverford School has stood as a place where boys discover purpose, sharpen intellect, and shape character. Yet long before the crest was carved or the mission formalized, the spirit of the School was being forged by men whose lives modeled the very virtues Haverford now seeks to instill. Their stories—rooted in perseverance, creativity, integrity, and selflessness—became more than historical footnotes. Over time, they evolved into symbols, teachings, and eventually, into the foundations of a system designed to unite generations of boys:
The House System was created not merely as an organizational structure, but as a living tribute to these four “Founding Archetypes,” individuals whose legacies echo the deeper essence of Haverford. Through their actions, each left behind more than achievements; they offered a way of being—a blueprint for the kind of men Haverford hopes its students will become. As the School deepened its mission to know, challenge, and support every boy, the House System emerged as a natural extension of that mission: smaller communities of belonging, places where character is practiced, not preached; where mentorship flows across ages; where boys see themselves as part of a lineage of greatness.
To honor the timeless nature of their contributions, each House was given a Latin motto, evoking both classical ideals and the enduring pursuit of virtue. Each was also entrusted with a symbol—an anchor, a lantern, a compass, and an oak tree—objects that carry meaning not just for the Houses themselves, but for the very narrative of Haverford. These symbols serve as reminders that character is not accidental; it is chosen, cultivated, and lived.
Thus the Houses—Smith, Cassatt, Severinghaus, and Wilson—were formed. Though distinct in story and virtue, they share one purpose: to guide boys toward lives of purpose, leadership, scholarship, and moral strength.
Within these Houses, students find belonging. They find mentors. They find challenge. And, most importantly, they find themselves.

The Creed of the Four Houses
This creed is designed to be spoken aloud at ceremonies, House gatherings, and community events. It reflects the shared mission, virtues, and spirit behind all four Houses. It is written to be memorable, rhythmic, and powerful enough to unite Smith, Cassatt, Severinghaus, and Wilson under one banner.
“The Call of the Houses”
Smith calls us to rise.
Cassatt calls us to dare.
Severinghaus calls us to choose what is right.
Wilson calls us to serve.
Together, we answer.
Together, we stand.
Together, we are Haverford.
“The Brotherhood”
We are the Houses of Haverford—
Many voices, one community.
Many strengths, one purpose.
Many stories, one brotherhood.
In unity, we rise.
In character, we lead.
In service, we stand tall.
Four Houses. One School. One Haverford.
