The Haverford Middle School crew program is an opportunity for 7th and 8th grade boys to try out the sport of rowing and see if it is a good fit for them as an Upper School sport. With the opening of the new Conshohocken Rowing Center, the spring 2015 program will allow the boys to row on the water more frequently.

The philosophy of the program is to teach the boys good technique and help them learn about the commitment and dedication the sport requires. Not only will they be challenged physically, but the middle school program will teach discipline, time management, and strong team building skills. All of these are qualities of a well-rounded Haverford student athlete.

The spring program will be five days each week. Two days will be on the Haverford campus learning technique on the rowing machines (ergometers) and three days on the water at the Haverford rowing facility. Weather permitting, the boys will get a chance to row on the water 3 days per week throughout the 10-week spring season and possibly row in a championship regatta at the end of the year.

Rowing crew is very different than any other sport at Haverford. It requires special equipment and facilities. These requirements are not always on The Haverford School campus. Because of this, additional costs arrise to run the program.

In the fall of 2013, The Haverford School held its first Middle School Learn-to-Row. It was a great success and around 20 boys took part. The goal is to have a fall learn-to-row sessions each school year to help introduce the sport of rowing to interested athletes. Each Learn-to-Row is a 2-day session that teaches the basics of rowing and technique.
