F. Zerban "Zerb" Brown '46

After graduating from Yale, serving in the U.S. Air Force in North Africa, receiving an M.A. in Political Science at the University of Colorado, and beginning a Ph.D. at Berkeley, Zerb passed the foreign service exam in 1958 and entered the State Department where he served for 26 years. He served in France, at SEATO in Thailand, two years in Moscow, Cyprus, and many years in Southeast Asia, mostly in Vietnam where he was country director for Brunei, Myanmar/Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam. Zerb retired from the State in 1984 and spent three years on the professional staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and several years teaching at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International studies. In 1977, Zerb married Ellen Herscher, an active and well known archaeologist, and they had a daughter, Frances.
