Brian Long named Director of Cross-Country Program

Brian Long named Director of Cross-Country Program

Brian Long has been named the Director of Cross-Country Program, effective immediately. Long has been an assistant with the program since 2015 and serves as an Upper School history teacher. Long helped the program to its 2016 Inter-Ac championship and PAISAA performance.

“I am thrilled to take over leadership of The Haverford School’s cross-country program,” said Long. “I am committed to building a team that welcomes all runners and can compete with the best in the area. This team means a lot to me, and I’m excited to build on the program’s recent success.”

“We are extremely excited to have Brian lead our cross-country program. In addition to his experience as a high-level runner and his familiarity with our program as an assistant coach, Brian fits Haverford’s teacher/counselor/coach model perfectly,” said Haverford’s Director of Athletics Mike Murphy. “As Director of Cross-Country Program, he will lead a program that scaffolds from the Middle School directly into the Upper School program.”

His running career started early in life, when he competed at Saint Xavier High School in Louisville, Ky., a nationally-ranked program. He earned the Kentucky State Championship title in cross-country and the 1600m. At the national level, Long led his team to a 17th place performance at the Nike Cross-Country Championship. He also won the Penn Relays 3000m Championship of America and was awarded the Kentucky Gatorade Athlete of the Year and All-American status.

Long continued his career at Villanova University, where he found further success. As a member of the cross-country team, Villanova placed 13th, 25th, and 23rd at the NCAA National Championship and won the 2011 Big East Cross-Country Championship.
