    Sawyers, planers, & tree cookies: a trip to the Spacht Sawmill

    The Upper School Woodworking Arts class took a field trip to Spacht Sawmill in Fairview Village, Pennsylvania. The tour started with some basic facts about forestry, conservation, forest management, and the natural characteristics of trees and wood. Carol and Dave Spacht discussed with the boys old and new sawmill technology and what a sawyer looks for in a tree before cutting it into lumber.

    A rootin' tootin' good time

    Second graders were transported to the Wild West when real-life cowboy Chad McCormack stepped into their classroom with his leather boots, western hat, and “yes sir, no sir” timbre. McCormack, an Iraq War veteran who served in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, is the ranch manager of Hobble Diamond Ranch in Montana. Owned by Robert '72 and Susan Burch P’13 ’28, the 30,000-acre ranch is home to horses, cattle, and pheasant. McCormack fielded questions from our boys, revealing some surprising facts!

    Candy Montgomery P'94 is part of the fabric of Haverford's history - quite literally. Since 1987, she has solidified the School's athletic dominance with the ceremonial stitching of the sweater following the School's Haverford/EA day wins. That's 22 gold stitchings over the years, a tradition she repeated on Nov. 16 following the School's eighth consecutive year of "keeping the sweater."

In an effort to recognize when there is a shift in social norms, as well as to forward the School's vision of creating men of character, I share the following thought: When did we hit the tipping point for the expression of gratitude to change from “You’re welcome” to “No problem,” and is this really no problem?
